Against All Authority?

I was brought up in liberal Christianity—a clear reaction by my parents to their own conservative upbringing. I initially resonated with its compassion, but later rejected it for its lack of conviction. The banner over my family had been our ‘being for the underdog.’ It took me a long time to realize that the other side of that banner was ‘being against the overlord.’

‘Against all authority’ proves a dangerous idea that comes back to bite parents. Further, it dishonors God, who is our authority. The authority of God’s Word, the authority in church, the authority of government, and the authority in families, structures all reality; opposing any or all of them brings serious consequences.
